Amusing ads from the past for Heuga carpet tiles

I have stumbled across a couple of amusing old TV adverts for Heuga carpet tiles on YouTube - one from Australia (1984) and another older one from the original homeland of carpet tiles - the Netherlands. Whilst the latter is in Dutch the message is clear - chilly hard floor is made warm and comfortable with Heuga carpet tiles.

The colours and designs of FLOR by heuga carpet tiles have come a long way since the older ads, but the messages still stand - warm, comfortable, practical and flexible flooring! Also included a link to a more recent advert showing the design flexibility of carpet tiles.

Avoid boring flooring

A consumer recently asked for some advice in creating an interesting floor design using FLOR by heuga tiles for her home. She currently has a floor of our high pile range LazyLounge in one colour - Dark Chocolate.

I thought it could be useful to share the details here in case there are other people out there wanting to get creative.

At FLOR by heuga we always try to encourage the use of different colours and textures to create a unique and interesting floor design as this is the true benefit of carpet tiles and you will see that our catalogue and website is full of photos showing different floor design ideas.

Here are some of the options I suggested:

Combination Ideas - add a few feature tiles to create interest eg a stripe, border or just single tiles

1. Same colour, different texture

See the image for a combination of CountryClassic and Country Contemporary - an example of a combination of different textures in the same colour.

A similar effect is possible using LazyLounge - Dark Chocolate and PuzzlePieces colour Dark Chocolate. This would be an excellent combination product for a subtle variation on the floor. These two products could be used in a variety of patterns.

2. Combine Dark Chocolate with a bright vibrant shade - such as green, orange or red

See the image where LazyLounge Dark Chocolate is combined with colours in our PuzzlePieces range (Carrot Juice and Crimson Pink). This certainly creates impact on the floor.

3. Beige/Brown combination

A subtle complementary combination - Dark Chocolate and Biscotti are a popular pairing. In the picture this shows a main floor in PuzzlePieces in colour Biscotti, combined with LazyLounge in colour Biscotti and PuzzlePieces in colour Dark Chocolate.

With a main floor in Dark Chocolate you could combine with colour Biscotti in LazyLounge and/or PuzzlePieces.

Purple Carpets and Purple Rug Ideas

Deep purple is a popular colour in interior design at the moment and what beats a luxurious shag pile purple carpet for a contemporary swish theme.

Purple rugs can be a decadent addition to a living room or bedroom, especially in a soft feel.

Domotex 2010

With around 40,000 visitors and 1,400 exhibitors, Domotex, Hannover is one of the key events in the flooring industry and a truly global event with exhibitors and visitors from all over the world.

I visited the show last week and saw that there were some innovative and inspiring products to admire (mainly in the Rugs area) and there were some very stylish stand designs. However I did feel that there was more innovation last year and this year was a little disappointing, probably reflecting reduced budgets.

The highlight for me was hearing from suppliers that they are hopeful and optimistic about the year ahead with a notable increase in orders and new product development plans for 2010.

House Beautiful Gold Award for Best Flooring

The FLOR by heuga team was delighted to be presented with the Gold Award for Best Flooring at the the House Beautiful Awards 2009! The Awards ceremony took place on 26th November 2009 and FLOR by heuga's Tonal Trends Rugs collection was selected as the winner.

The judging panel was made up of various experts and celebrities from the world of design. Here's a great illustration of how carpet tiles can be used to personalise a space in your home.

Here a Liverpool Football Club fan has created their own floor design using FLOR by heuga carpet tiles. The design shows the flexibility of carpet tiles meaning you can be as creative as you like on the floor. The floor design incorporates our shag pile range Funky Feet along with the Puzzle Pieces cut pile range. The tiles have been cut to size and fit together which works really well.

Here's a couple of photos from the National Floor Show in Harrogate yesterday.

The FLOR by heuga sales team were certainly kept busy all day talking to retailers and other visitors and hopefully today and tomorrow they will be similarly busy.

Many people commented that the FLOR by heuga stand was an excellent display and people were delighted to see that we are one of the few flooring companies doing something different and really developing as a company.

Over the last few months we have launched many new products and an entirely new designer rugs package along with the FLOR by heuga Studio, which is a new way to display our products instore. We genuinely are an innovative and inspirational brand and we are pleased to show off our fabulous range of carpet tiles for the home which can all be seen on the FLOR by heuga website.

National Floor Show, Harrogate

Arrows Design Kitchen Carpet Tiles

Here's a funky modern floor design using New Nature carpet tiles from FLOR by heuga to create an arrow floor design in a kitchen. These carpet tiles feature a woven texture and are suitable for a range of demanding areas such as kitchens, dining rooms and hallways.

These carpet tiles are treated to be stain resistant and have an antimicrobial treatment to inhibit the growth of bacteria so they are good looking and practical.

While the design looks quite complicated, it is all possible with a metal straight edge and a sharp carpet knife. When installing a design of carpet tiles it's often easiest to place them loosely to play around and rearrange them then once happy cut the design into place and use the cut tiles as a template and fit them into the main floor of carpet tiles.

Most people don't think of the floor as a design area but with carpet tiles the design flexibility is limited only by your own imagination so you can be really flexible and create a carpet to get noticed.

How to install carpet tiles

How do I install carpet tiles?

FLOR by heuga would normally recommend that you get a professional fitter to install your carpet tiles especially if you wish to create a special floor design. However if you are comfortable with DIY then it is possible to install tiles yourself and all the instructions are included in your box of carpet tiles.

Firstly I include the 'straightforward carpet tile installation instructions' as used by me then below I include the similar but slightly more complex version that is preferred by more technical DIY people. Maybe a combination of them both is best.

Straighforward carpet tile installation instructions:

1. Sub-floor

FLOR by heuga carpet tiles can be laid over any smooth, hard floor like parquet, laminate and stone. Ensure the surface is clean, level and dry.

2. Preparation

FLOR by heuga recommends that all carpet tiles are removed from the box and allowed to acclimatise for 24 hours to room temperature.

You will need:
A Stanley knife fitted with a new heavy duty blades
A metal straight edge, cutting board and tape measure
Double sided tape, carpet tape or spray adhesive (if a big area)
A marker pen

It makes sense to do some preparation in advance and place some tiles in position to check how it will look. This is especially important if you are combining different products and creating your own floor design. Also this will show if you have a thin strip of tiles at one end - if this is the case, work from the centre of the room to ensure equal sized tiles at each edge.

You may use double sided tape or a spray adhesive (if a very large room like an office) to attach tiles to the floor. If using a spray adhesive refer to the instructions on the container.

The arrows on the back of each carpet tile indicate the direction of the pile. When laying your carpet tiles you will need to refer to the catalogue or the packaging to ascertain the installation methods available for each product (monolithic, quarterturn, brick, ashlar and non directional - see catalogue for reference). If more than one method is available, select the installation method you want - try them out to see the different effects and then lay the tiles according to the arrows on the back of the tiles.

3. Cutting carpet tiles

Use a sharp carpet knife and a metal straight edge to cut the tiles to the right size. Turn the tile with the backing facing upwards and cut it from the back. Crack the tile from behind and cut through the top fibre from behind.

When cutting tiles to fit at the wall turn the carpet tile upside down and set it flush with the wall and mark at both ends where the carpet tile overlaps the next tile. Then cut the tile using the straight edge.

When cutting tiles, make sure you mark the direction of the pile on the back of the cut tiles that lose the arrows. You could use your knife to draw an arrow on the back of the tile for example or use a marker pen.

4. Installation

Put the floor design together without fixing permanently to make sure you are happy with the design.

Place the tiles on the floor making sure you fit the tiles closely together. If using double sided tape you will only need to stick down occasional tiles and those on the edges to keep these in place.

5. Completion

Vacuum your floor and it’s ready!

You can easily update your floor design by replacing tiles as and when required or when you fancy a change.

More Complex Carpet tile installation instructions

Step 1 - Sub-floor

FLOR by heuga carpet tiles can be laid over stone, ceramic or vinyl floors. Do not lay on a soft sub-floor such as existing carpet, underlay, cushion, vinyl or cork tiles.

Before laying, ensure that the floor is clean, hard, smooth, level and dry.

Step 2 - Tools and preparation
You will need:
A Stanley knife fitted with a new heavy duty blades
A straight edge, cutting board and tape measure
Pencil or chalk marker

FLOR by heuga recommends that all carpet tiles be removed from the box and allowed to acclimatise for 24 hours to room temperature.

The arrows on the back of each carpet tile indicate the direction of the pile. For ranges designed to be laid in a 'monolithic' or 'same direction' style, the tiles should be arranged with the arrows pointing in the same direction. However, other ranges can be installed in a variety of ways to achieve pattern effects (e.g. quarterturn, brick, ashlar or random - refer to catalogue or packaging to be sure). In these cases, you should always follow the instructions printed on the packaging.

Step 3 - Measurement

Plan your floor installation by drawing a straight line approximately 75cm from the main wall and then draw a line at right angles to this. The lines must be straight and at right angles to each other.

If you have an L-shaped room, you will need to subdivide the room into oblongs and for planning purposes, treat each oblong as a separate unit.

Step 4 - Trial run

It is best to carry out a trial run along both lines to ensure that the planning is correct. Lay the first tile into the right angle formed by the crossing lines, and continue to lay tiles along the main line up to the wall.

If you find that this leaves you with a very narrow strip against the wall, you may have to replan the guidelines.

Step 5 - Laying the first carpet tiles

Once you have ensured that your initial laying point is suitable, fit the tiles along the first two lines, creating two crossed lines of tiles. To do this, attach adhesive tape in each corner of the tiles and stick each tile to the floor. Perimeter tiles must be anchored firmly. When laying carpet tiles install closley but be careful not to trap the pile between the edges of the tiles, particularly for shagpile or cut pile carpets.

Step 6 - Laying the main area

Now cut the tiles in to the main wall and continue the tiling by building up a pyramid shape. Continue to expand the pyramid outwards until you are less than one tile width from each wall. Where necessary, adhesive tape to keep the tiles in position. Ensure that each tile is butted tightly against its neighbour.

Step 7 - Cutting the edge tiles 1

You will have to cut the edge tiles to fit the space between the last row of full tiles and the wall. Turn the tile to be cut over, with the backing facing upwards and the arrows going in the opposite direction. Place the upside-down tile against the wall and underneath the last full tile of the installation. If cutting a tile you may need to draw arrows on the remainder of the tile with a marker pen to ensure you can still see the direction of the pile.

Step 8 - Cutting the edge tiles 2

Using the edge of the full tile as a guide, draw a line across the tile to be cut. Remove the tile and score along the line with a Stanley knife and a straight edge. Then crack the tile from behind and cut through the top cloth. When cutting, always use a sharp blade and take precautions to cut safely.

Step 9 - Positioning the edge tiles

Position the cut tile with the cut edge against the wall. Make sure that the arrow on the back is pointing in line with the installation direction instructions.

Step 10 - Pile direction

The arrows on the backs of the tiles indicate the pile direction. They must all point in the same direction to ensure a consistent finish. Please note that special care must be taken with other laying directions.

We have just launched a range of rugs which allow you to create a truly unique rug using colours and textures from our Tonal Trends range. This is a flexible rug system as you select the tiles so you can combine different colours and textures and coordinate with your exisiting furniture and interior scheme.

You can choose from 6 suggested designs and then you can choose which products to use.

Here are two of the designs which combine the shag pile look of LazyLounge/2 carpet tiles and our cut pile PuzzlePieces/2. Colours in the Tonal Trends collection range from these beautiful rich purple and aubergine shades to calming neutral brown and beige tones.

ITV1 will be showing repeats of last year's 60 Minute Makeover series including an episode that features our luxurious shagpile carpet tile - LazyLounge.

The black and white design themed bedroom is scheduled to be shown on ITV1 on Thursday 30th July at 10.30am. The black and white bedroom will feature a classic chequerboard design of black and white carpet tiles.

We have recently updated our LazyLounge range to feature some fabulous new colours in line with latest colour trends in interior design so the nearest equivalent colours are Black Velvet and Waterlily as featured in our recent photoshoot and shown here in these photos.

The black and white combination is a design classic in all things creative including clothing and interiors and it will remain a favourite amongst designers and decorators everywhere.

Following on from yesterday's post here is another product within the Tonal Trends range. This is an update to our lovely luxurious shag pile carpet called LazyLounge. LazyLounge/2 has been recoloured by our expert colourist and will be available in 8 stunning colours including Green Olive, Biscotti and Dark Chocolate.

The colours featured in the images here are Waterlily and Black Velvet and the close up shot on the right really shows off the soft luxurious texture - perfect for a bedroom or other cosy area.

Summer decorating - bring a bit of colour into your home

You can't beat a glimpse of summer to lift your spirits. The trees and flowers are blossoming and it's great to see the vast array of colours outside.

So, why not bring the outdoors in and brighten up the inside of your home.

As featured on the cover of our catalogue this is a vibrant, funky range with a modern high loop texture, perfect for creating a statement on the floor. There are various combinations with 2 or 3 or more colours which look really great.

Last week we ran the first of many FLOR by heuga Academy sessions. This is our new training programme for our retail partners so that we can share our knowledge with them and improve the service that our customers receive in stores. The 2 day course included company information and workshops using our products as well as true demonstrations of sustainability in action and some general training in interior design.

The course went really well and there are similar courses being run for our Dutch and German retailers as well as many more for our UK partners going forwards.

The FLOR by heuga team were delighted to win a prestigious award last week at the House Beautiful Awards ceremony held at Madame Tussauds, London.

Stylish Pebbles Theme Bedroom

Here's a great way to use our 3D Pebbles carpet tiles as an accent within a floor design.

Under and around the bed we installed our soft luxurious shagpile carpet LazyLounge in colour Cloud as a real treat for feet on a cold morning. The main grey area is our Puzzle Pieces range in colour Smoke. The Pebbles tiles were placed at random positions within the floor and throughout the en-suite. This scheme proves that you can combine stylish design with cosy warmth which can be a tricky balance, but so important for liveable bedroom schemes.

Installing carpet tiles design

It's that time of year again when I'm all consumed with next year's catalogue. The layout is looking great and we have stepped it up a bit to make it a little more stylish. Obviously a key part of the catalogue is the images and we had a photo shoot a couple of months back to get some new shots all showing great combinations of colours and textures.

I have some step by step pictures below of one of the more complicated floor designs. Mike Reynolds (creative director) designed the floor, inspired by vibrant colourful flames and the warmth and welcoming ambiance that a fire adds to a home.

Eddie Kempster and his team of fitters were on board to install the design.
Initially they installed the Country Classic colour Pecan as the background floor . Then they cut and laid the coloured tiles of Tender Touch on top. We photographed the layout and then they cut and lay it into the background floor using the photo for reference. This was certainly a job for professional fitters!

The all important final touches were added by Avril O'Donnell (stylist).

Once all was ready including lighting and a roaring fire, two brothers were brought in to play Monopoly in the background and finally photographer Nick Yarsley took the shot.

The final shot is a stunning demonstration of what you can achieve with FLOR by heuga carpet tiles - a completely unique floor design!

The result is both cosy and warming and funky and modern – the flame device looks like a free form rug - a unique new way of having the design impact of a rug that is created specifically for the room.

ITV 60 minute makeover features FLOR by heuga

We have supplied products several times to ITV's 60 minute makeover show and the latest show in Cardiff featured a black and white chequerboard pattern combining LazyLounge in colours Cloud and Night.

The next show to feature FLOR by heuga is on Thursday 16th October at 2pm and will feature LazyLounge in colour Grass along with our Animal Print carpet in the Cow design - sounds like a fab and funky combination for a kid's bedroom or playroom!

Another show will be featuring an eco makeover and will include our climate neutral flooring ComfyCord which is a great wool product and once I know broadcast dates I'll post them on here.

Floor display In-Toto Kitchens, Redbrick Mill

Back in August last year I wrote about visiting Redbrick Mill in Batley and how I hoped one day we could get a display in there (click here for post).

This post was read recently by one of the store owners from In-Toto Kitchens and we have since installed our flooring in the design consultation area in their store.

The showroom has just undergone a massive refurbishment and showcases some fabulous new kitchens - click here for the In-Toto Kitchens website and store details.

Although not complete here's a photo of the new design area showcasing a great floor design using LuxuryLiving, FunkyFeet and TenderTouch. Other products used are leBistro and SmartSteps which are ideal for kitchens and dining rooms so here is a great opportunity for people to see our designs on the floor in a stylish environment.

Along with a very stylish range of kitchens, the guys at In-Toto (Andrew and David) offer full design and installation support and they are really friendly helpful guys who understand good design.

John Lewis Display Nottingham

Here's a couple of new installations in John Lewis store, Nottingham. This is a really great demonstration of how carpet tiles can be used to create a modern rug combining different colours and textures.

We know that people want to see and walk on our ranges in store so it is great to see John Lewis supporting our brand and using our FLOR ranges in their store showcases.

Creating a rug using carpet tiles means you can be totally flexible in size, shape and design of your rug so you can create something that is perfectly sized and coordinated for your home.

Contemporary farmhouse floor design

A couple of weeks ago we did quite a large scale photo shoot down in Kent to show off some really inspirational floor designs combining different colours and textures of carpet tiles.

This was one of my favourite shots featuring a stylish farmhouse kitchen and all the current interiors magazines prove that the colours used on the floor are very up to the minute with latest trends in interior design.

This isn't the final version of the photo but a quick snap taken during the set up.

Products used were Working Week Cut in colour Plant (blue/green colour carpet tiles), Puzzle Pieces in colour Tobacco (brown carpet) and PuzzlePieces in colour Lemon (light cream carpet tiles). This was created mainly using full tiles so something that could be easily recreated in your own home.

Store display in Aldiss, Norwich

In answer to our customers seeking a more inspirational experience in stores, we have recently developed a new store display that we are introducing to our top retailers.

These photos show one of our first to be installed in Aldiss in Norwich.

The stand sits on our fantastic Russian floor design which means customers can see and feel the floor in situ as well as see full tiles, catalogues and sample chips.

The man on the left of the photo is the floorcoverings manager, Neil Hubbard. The man on the right is the assistant manager, Ian Dodson.

All the staff in the store are really excited about the new display and absolutely love the Russian design on the floor so they will be more than happy to chat to customers about the FLOR collection.

Recently it has come to my attention that our website http://www.florbyheuga.com/ isn't coming up in the results on UK search engines. It turns out this is because our website is a .com site rather than a .co.uk site and some other technical complications.

Not only is this an irritation to me (as I like to see lots of visitors on our website), but it's also not nice for the people in the UK that actually want to find our website and are denied the opportunity to see our pretty pictures, inspirational carpet designs and learn all about FLOR by heuga.

We are working on a solution and it will take some time to kick in with Google and the like so in the meantime, this is a blatant attempt to get some results for FLOR by heuga in the UK so that people can find our site when searching for us. I don't know if it will work but it's certainly worth a try!

Noisy hard floors - sound proofing with carpet tiles

We are getting a lot of enquiries from customers about reducing the noise problems with hard floors such as laminate, solid wood and slate.

Carpet tiles are a great solution to the problem of noisy floors as you can simply lay the tiles on top of the hard floor (as long as the hard floor is fairly level).

Here you can see a coloured runner created on top of stone tiles. The FLOR tiles are simply stuck down with some double sided tape and this has reduced the noise problem in a big way. These are not permanent so they can be changed around or lifted as and when desired without damaging the hard floor below. Also there is no need to worry about slips and trips as the low height of the tiles means this is not a problem.

This 'rainbow runner' was created using various colours from the FLOR by heuga Tender Touch and PuzzlePieces ranges.

Teamwork - Dinner at Grand Designs Live

Here's some of the team relaxing and enjoying a well deserved Tapas meal in Canary Wharf following a long day at the show. Over the nine days at Grand Designs Live we saw and chatted to thousands of people - many who had never heard of carpet tiles, modular flooring or FLOR by Heuga and were amazed with this amazing new concept!

It was tough on our feet but we all kept each other going and made it a really great show. Sanne did a great job organising things and making sure everything ran smoothly and spirits remained high as we all kept each other going throughout the show.

Today is the fourth day of the Grand Designs Live show and it is going really well with lots of interested and inspired visitors to our stand. Yesterday (Bank holiday Monday) was a bit manic with lots of people to chat to throughout the day and today seems to be a bit quieter as you'd expect.

We have shared out the staffing on the stand and I got landed with the whole bank holiday weekend so this afternoon is the first chance I've had to rest my weary feet.

Moroccan Theme Bedroom

This is a new image from a recent photoshoot for FLOR by Heuga. We wanted to show how you can be creative on the floor to create your own unique design scheme in your home.

Inspiration
The inspiration for this room design came from the dark wood Moroccan style furniture that was already in the room.

Morocco is a beautiful land, rich with heritage and culture. Moroccan style reflects the vibrant nature of the place and inspires a sense of comfort, warmth, luxury and elegance.

Colours and Textures
When it comes to Moroccan style there are some great colours to choose from including rich purples, vibrant reds and deep oranges which we combined through the furnishings and the floor. Texture is a key element in Moroccan style and we used a number of different sumptuous textures including a luxurious shagpile carpet tile around the bed, suede cushions, soft cut pile carpet tiles and a silky soft bed cover.

The white walls ensured the room remained light and the border of white fluffy tiles - LazyLounge around the bed provides a great feeling for your toes when you climb out of bed each morning.

The jewel design in the foreground of the picture creates an elegant regal look which we created by cutting different sizes of carpet tiles and then fitting them into the base floor design.

I think this design is stunning and I love the fact that you can easily create something unique in your home based on inspiration from a special holiday or a favourite piece of furniture. The bedroom is a great place to create such a personal space.

Over the past few months we've been working on a big advertising campaign for FLOR by Heuga which we're launching this month.

The FLOR by Heuga adverts will be appearing in magazines such as the Radio Times, BBC Good Homes, Daily Mail Weekend, You Magazine, Sunday Times magazine, Your M&S and Good Housekeeping.

I think the adverts look really great and I can't wait to see copies of the advert in print. This is the first time we've communicated the new FLOR by Heuga brand so we're all hoping it goes down well with the public.

Here's some photos from the Eco House at the Ideal Home Show.
Heuga flooring has been installed throughout the house using a variety of patterns and designs. The lighting isn't ideal but it's nice to be able to show some of the designs.

I was hoping to get these on here earlier but have been away on my holidays so a bit delayed.

Just few days left before the show finishes - Sunday 6th April.

Ideal Home Show 2008

Heuga flooring has been selected for the entire space in the Eco Home at the Ideal Home Show which starts on 14th March.

The show runs from 14th March - 6th April at Earl's Court, London so there's plenty of opportunity to get down there and be inspired by the latest interior trends and home ideas.

With the launch of the new 2008 catalogue we have a few new products including New Nature. This is available in 8 colours: Gold and Rustic iron (shown here) make a nice combination in my opinion!

This flooring is suitable for most rooms in the house but we think it's perfect for kitchens and dining areas if you want a bit of softness as it features a stain resistant treatment and antimicrobial so you don't need to worry about spillage issues. As with all tiles you can always lift and clean a tile or replace it with one from somewhere inconspicuous!

New Nature has a textured woven appearance. It is good for keeping its structure and appearance and it looks really smart when you install it. We recommend this to be installed quarterturn whihc gives you a subtle chequerboard effect.

It seems like a distant memory now, but I need to make a note of the Heuga Christmas party which took place on Friday 7th December in Eindhoven in Holland.

Most of the team were there from across Europe, mostly with their partners in tow to celebrate the festive season which made for a really good atmosphere and a great night was had by all!

There was lots of dancing and chatting and plenty of fun.

Catalogue 2008

I have been spending a lot of time lately on the new Heuga catalogue for 2008 as this is one of my annual projects. I work with a design agency called Digital Bubble based in Batley and I am consistently impressed with Gary's ability to turn things around very quickly and his patience despite all the little changes and amends I send to him.

We have some great new products and design features in the new catalogue which I think looks really nice and fresh. I have just sent off the final files to the printer so next week I'll do the final sign off of the proofs. We're all on schedule to get delivery of them before Christmas in plenty of time for people ordering catalogues in January so that's good news!

Design your own rug with carpet tiles

Here's a neat idea for anyone wanting to soften a hard floor with something funky and unique!

Why not create your own rug with carpet tiles?
As long as you stick down the individual tiles - double sided tape is usually best - it is a really nice way of doing something a bit different. I keep hearing people tell me they are fed up with the laminate flooring they installed throughout their home and this is an inexpensive way to warm and soften an area. You can create something really unique by combining different colours and textures (minimum order is 4 tiles, 1 sqm) or simply create a single colour rug.

The stylish Dutch living room pictured above features FunkyFeet Rug which has been in the Heuga range for a while now and this works really well. This was created with FunkyFeet Rug in colour Onyx and laid on top of a hard and cold stone floor.

Our 123's package works really well in kids bedrooms and playrooms as this is a pack of 12 carpet tiles (3sqm) including numbers 1-9 and +, x and -. In the picture on the left this is installed amongst matching plain colours in PuzzlePieces, but this works equally well on a laminate or wooden floor to protect small (and big!) feet from the cold!

In the 2008 Heuga catalogue we will be launching a number of fabulous rug packages that combine different ranges from the Heuga collection - they are really stunning and I'll try to get some pics on here as soon as I can!

Ideal Home Show, Ireland

This week I travelled over to Dublin for the Ideal Home Show. A lady called Anne Ellard was one of the finalists in the Ideal Homes Interior Designer of the Year award with her entry 'Eco Chic Bedroom' and she used our fabulous FunkyFeet carpet tiles in her showcase.

Anne's showcase featured dark wood furniture with accessories and furnishings in light nature-inspired shades and it was a beautiful room set. She had installed a border of FunkyFeet in colour Barn stone around the bed within a main floor of FunkyFeet in colour Pearl.

I visited the show with Malcolm James, pictured with Anne in her showcase room.

Malcolm is an Account Manager for Heuga Home Flooring covering Ireland.

Malcolm and I were both thrilled to see the room design and the response to our flooring. Anne told us that she had been inundated with people asking about the fab shagpile flooring and she had quickly run out of Heuga catalogues to hand out.

Anne is based in Waterford City offering interior design advice for homes.

She is particularly interested in sustainable yet stylish interior designs and this is reflected in the room she designed for the show.

We have a great new Heuga TV advert in the making which should be hitting the screens in the UK next week.

This is all around making flooring fun and being creative with your floor using Heuga carpet tiles. Initially this is fairly small scale and will be featured on digital lifestyle channels, however we are hoping to work on a load more publicity and promotions in the coming months.

Heuga Sales Launch

We had our sales launch last week which was a mixture of informative presentations along with some fun. Most of the informative stuff was around the launch of our new wool carpet tiles range ComfyCord as covered in a previous post.

The fun stuff involved a golf clinic which was quite fun (although I don't think I'll be taking up golf as a hobby!)

We also hired bikes (in true Dutch style) to go riding across Holland to get to a boat.

I managed to grab a few snaps of the team including Patrick Riley (Heuga Managing Director) whilst riding along - much to the amusement of my colleagues as I tried to ride in a straight line.

In true dedication to his customer, Ton (one of our Dutch Account Managers) was talking shop whilst riding along!

We had some dinner on the boat and travelled round the little island where we were staying then rode back to the hotel - this time in the dark after one or two beers which was interesting and luckily we all got back safely!

It was a nice evening and a really good opportunity for the Heuga teams to chat with each other.

Maarten Brons organised the event and did a great job - even providing ponchos for us all in case it rained (which, luckily it didn't!)

As you can see from the photo, Maarten enjoyed himself too!

Heuga Brochure Viewer

My contribution to the sales launch was presenting a couple of tools we have developed on the Heuga website. One of these was the Virtual Room Tool covered in an earlier post and the other was our new brochure viewer which is another new play thing on Heuga.com

This brochure viewer means you can flick the pages of our catalogue online and click on products to go straight into our online catalogue to order samples and view more details about products.

You can click on the magnifying glass cursor to zoom in on the pages and you can click on the product name or tile image to find out more about the product.

We are having our internal Heuga sales launch meeting this week and we will be mainly talking about our new comfycord wool carpet tiles.

These are our latest range - soft ribbed floor squares available in 6 natural colours. I think this is a really good looking range and it is installed quarterturn for a subtle patttern.

LazyLounge - sneak preview of Heuga's new shagpile carpet tile range

I recently went to the lovely Isle of Wight for the latest Heuga photo shoot for the 2008 catalogue and I have to share some photos of one of our brand new products as it's really fab. This is LazyLounge - our latest shagpile range which looks and feels amazing.

We installed this in a house on the Isle of Wight and the guy who owned the house was so thrilled that he wanted to keep it so he bought the floor there and then!

This design is really neat - stylish and interesting but not wacky and it feels amazingly soft!

The shot we did for the catalogue features a poodle called Anastasia - she was adorable and a real poser loving every minute of the shoot! The pics are hillarious and she looks like she owns the place.

Unfortunately LazyLounge won't be available to buy until January 2008 but I had to get these pics on here for an early sneak preview.

Redbrick Mill, Batley

I've made a couple of trips to Redbrick Mill lately as it's a nice place for checking out the latest trends in furniture and interior design. There's a good mix of alternative interiors stuff and I would recommend it for a rainy weekend if you want some inspiration or if you've got a spare wad of cash and fancy something special for your home.

It is a bit unusual to find a trendy interiors place like this in Batley, West Yorkshire which was once a prosperous mill town but nowadays is somewhat less grand, however it is nice to see regeneration of a place like this and it would probably be lost in a big city like Leeds.

We have learnt that people are blown away when they see Heuga on the floor in a room setting but it's a bit difficult to get this kind of display in a traditional carpet store so we are looking at new types of places to show off our products and looking to place them in the stylish kind of environment that they deserve. Maybe one day we'll get some of our stuff in a place like this - I'll keep you posted!

Photo Shoot

I've arranged a few photo shoots now for Heuga catalogues and here's some of the people that get involved...

Helen Carey is a stylist and she finds fab real home locations and models for our pictures along with doing all the styling for the shots creating the right atmosphere in the homes.

Helen has done loads of interesting things and worked on some really interesting projects. We bumped into her mate Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen when we went to the 100% Design Show a couple of years ago.

Helen's husband Fraser Cunningham is the main photographer for the shoots and he is a good laugh and great at slecting the best angles and getting plenty of flooring in the shots.

Helen and Fraser live on the Isle of Wight which is a fab place and many of the shoots have been down there on the island.

The next main guy is Eddie Kempster and he runs a carpet fitting company 'E Kempster Flooring' focusing mainly on carpet tiles. He is a fun guy and keeps us all entertained.

It is amazing to watch him and his guys cut and fit tiles in the most awkward of spaces.

In this picture Eddie is sporting our FunkyFeet shagpile carpet tiles on his head and Fraser's glasses.

There are some other great people that get involved and I'll try and get some pics on the shoot.

So, tomorrow I need to order the products, confirm the dates with Eddie and sort out my travel to the lovely Isle of Wight for our next shoot for the 2008 Heuga catalogue. Here's a photo of a beautiful sunset from the beach from the last time I was there. If you look closely yu just about make out the Spyglass Inn in Ventnor which is a lovely little pub where we've eaten a few times whilst on photo shoots.

After a lovely relaxing week off I'm back into the work thing and yesterday I got my broadband set up at home so that means my working day will be spent looking at my laptop followed by evenings of the same - I will have to limit myself on this blogging thing as it is a bit addictive and the temptation of Facebook could be a problem.

So, I've come back to a few problems with Heuga.com which various people are working on to resolve - poor guys may be up all night working on that, but hopefully it will be resolved by the morning.

Also I've got to organise a photo shoot for our 2008 catalogue so lots to sort out there but a great team of people to work with so it should be fun.

Facts about Holland

As I am still here in Holland I thought I'd find and share some interesting facts about Holland that you may or may not already know based on findings from various websites (so don't blame me if it's not 100% accurate)...

1. The population of Holland is around 16 million

2. There are twice as many bikes as there are cars in Holland - and be warned if you're driving in Holland as the cyclists have the right of way - always! Be prepared for them to ride straight across your path and if you hit one you're in real trouble.

3. Around half of the Netherlands lies below sea level.

This figure varies a lot amongst websites, some claiming a quarter, others a third, others over 50% but I ended up trusting the National Geographic website on the following page...

4. Dutch men are the tallest in the world at an average of 6 feet.

Interestingly in the nineteenth century the Netherlands was renowned for having the shortest men in Europe, with an average height of just 5'4" in 1850.

So, why?

One suggestion is due to the threat of Holland falling underwater and the need to keep one's head above water.

Another is down to the clogs they wear adding an extra 3 inches to their appearance.

But really...

Most likely it's down to the nation's health and wealth. Dutch people thrive on a protein-rich diet (they can't get enough cheese, milk and bread) and they have a national health service that ensures healthy development of their growing kids.

A regular visit to Scherpenzeel, Holland

I am in Holland at the moment, which is a regular thing for me as Heuga Home Flooring is based in Scherpenzeel in the Netherlands and the rest of the Marketing team are based out here so I tend to come over every other week to keep up to date.

This is the true home of the first carpet tile which was originally made over 50 years ago just around the corner from where I am writing.

It is 10.30pm Dutch time, I am in my hotel room as I write and I am not alone... I have the whining buzz of a mosquito in the room with me and I think I need to try and find it before falling asleep!

This is a picture of our Heuga showroom in Holland where I will spend most of the next 2 days. In here we have a big conference table at the other end of the room and we have meetings and catch-ups in here.

Our design student changes the floor design from time to time. At the moment this floor is a combination of half and quarter tiles of Simply Soft with the main floor in FunkyFeet.

Giraffe Print Floor

We had a nice large order for our Giraffe Print carpet tiles on Heuga.com today and that made me smile as it's a really fun design.

This is a fab product and it has raised a lot of interest amongst lots of people including an interior design tv programme in the UK on ITV called 60 Minute Makeover who will be featuring this product in a show in the Autumn.

One of my Dutch buddies Maarten found a blog going round Holland raving about how funky this Giraffe flooring is and encouraging people to gang up and order samples to make a floor out of them.

For the record, don't bother as we only supply little chips and when the next person asks why we can't send out bigger samples I might point them to this Dutch blog - sorry but this stuff is far too special to be giving it away!

I am genuinely fascinated by colour - why we choose certain colours, what that says about us and how colour can influence our emotions.

Here's some stuff about colours and what is most suitable for different rooms when decorating.

Red

Associations: passion, love, danger, excitement, energy, warmth, adventure, optimism

Rooms most suited to: bedrooms due to the passion and warmth, dining rooms as it stimulates the appetite and promotes sociable and lively feelings.

Heuga Virtual Room Tool

We have finally got our new Virtual Room Tool up and running on Heuga.com. We have spent ages working with a company to create this online tool where you can try out different floors in a room scene. It is really great and means you can get an idea of how a style looks before buying it.

We know people like to get creative with more than one colour or texture so we've included a combine option so you can add another style and see how the two look together.

Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Magazine

I used to manage the PR for Heuga but now this is down to my colleague Antoinet. I still get the cuttings reports and was very pleased to see that we appeared in interiors magazine Essential Kitchens, Bathrooms and Bedrooms (August issue) and this is the shot they featured.

Love it or hate it - you can't help but be amazed by this floor design! This Zebra print floor is great for kids' bedrooms as well as other rooms in your home if you have the courage to do something different!

This photo was taken on a shoot for kids' bedrooms and I wanted to know whether this could work in a different room so we threw a few tiles down in the kitchen/dining room and this was the result. I think it works a treat and there's a magazine editor that agrees!

The red border is done using half tiles of Puzzle Pieces around the edge.

Naming my Blog

Naming a blog is quite a challenge and in my search for inspiration I came across this post on the Business Week blog where these guys posted their brainstorm of a load of names...

I thought I'd do the same (despite working alone!) so I grabbed my Heuga scribbles pad and got a few names down. Here's some of the results:
I had a little help from a friend who suggested the smart 'Carpet Diem' - a play on the Latin phrase 'Carpe Diem' meaning 'Seize the day'. In my ignorance I had to check out the meaning and was very impressed. However I decided to keep it simple and Square-Vision was the winning choice.

Carpet tiles have a bit of an image problem but people are generally really impressed with the concept and design possibilities of carpet tiles once they've seen them in use so this blog is an attempt to share the delights of carpet tile design in the home.

Heuga at 100% Design

This is a picture from the 100% Design Show in Rotterdam earlier this year.

My colleagues organised this and I thought they did a great job on the floor creating a rug effect out of 4 different styles, especially including the funky Pebbles design tile, which is a great product!

Heuga T-shirt

A friend suggested my photo doesn't look like me as I'm normally suited up in my work attire, however it is me and I'm wearing a Heuga t-shirt so I think it's kind of appropriate - it sticks until I can find something else.

I'm still new to this whole thing so reducing the size of the photo is still beyond my knowledge!

The red t-shirt was for a great interiors show called De Woonbeurs last year in Amsterdam where I organised a Heuga stand and we wore these Heuga t-shirts. It was a really great show and it was really fab for our team to meet directly with people and talk about our products.

I also added that I'm Online Marketing Manager at Heuga - that's what I do and I am always interested what people think of our website http://www.heuga.com/

I look at it a lot and see all the little problems so it is really nice when someone says it is a decent site however I am open to criticism too - I can take it and hopefully I can make improvements based on people's thoughts.

My Square Vision!

I've decided it would be smart to write about the fun stuff that we get up to at Heuga.com because it is quite a fun place to be and we want to share our Square Vision with the world! Actually, I just came up with the term Square Vision this morning but I quite like it!

Heuga Home Flooring is all about being creative with your floor. Some people seem to be a bit nervous about straying from the conventional wall to wall carpet, but Heuga carpet tiles offer you a huge range of design options for flooring for your home. Some people just don't like the name 'carpet tiles' so we tried calling it 'modular flooring' to get over this problem but then people get all confused about what it is we are talking about.

Embrace the Tile

There's no need to be scared - it is time to be brave and embrace the endless possibilities of modular flooring, carpet tiles, carpet squares - whatever you want to call it !

Modern Floor Combination in the Dining Room

This is my favourite Heuga photo. Part of my job includes organising photography with a fab bunch of great people (will cover them later) so forgive me for feeling passionate about the results. Anyway this shot shows WoodWork around the edge of a rug of DayDream. This demonstrates how simple it is to make a floor more interesting and create a focus point for the room.

WoodWork is a great product as it looks like wood but is soft like carpet. Now that we have all experienced the faults of laminate - cold, hard, dust covered stuff - our WoodWork product ticks the boxes of stylish design with homey comfort.

DayDream is my favourite Heuga product (the light coloured product in the centre of the picture above). This comes in 3 similar light beige type colours, Cotton is my favourite as shown here. This has a lovely chunky texture design and looks like wool.

Luxurious Bedroom Floor Design

This picture shows an elaborate posh bedroom scheme with a fabulous luxurious floor.

The main product is Luxury Living in colour ice cream - a really stylish and stunning product combining three different textures in the same colour to create this subtle striped design.

In designer speak - the red carpet around the bed enhances the image of grandeur and adds a really stylish focus for the room. This red carpet is PuzzlePieces in colour Amaryllis.

PuzzlePieces comes in 20 colours and is a really great product to combine with others. If you love the colour red or orange or green, but you're a little nervous about having a floor entirely in that one colour then this is the perfect solution as you can add a border or a rug effect or a little focal point wherever you like to add your own personal touch to your design scheme.
